Critics have likened Alex Prager’s stylized, riveting and ominous large-scale photographs to the work of Cindy Sherman (scenario and dress-up), Alfred Hitchcock (females in peril) and David Lynch (the grotesqueries of Los Angeles), but she is established enough in her own right to dispense with comparisons. The self-taught Prager was raised in the Los Feliz neighborhood of LA by her grandmother and spent her childhood shuttling between California, Florida and Switzerland. She came to photography in her twenties after admiring the work of William Eggleston and set out to experiment with technique. Since then, Prager’s pictures have won an International Photography Award as well as a Lucie, been acquired by public collections including the Whitney, and appeared in publications such as i-D, Dazed and Confused and The New York Times Magazine. In 2010, her solo show “Week-end” opened in LA, New York, London and Japan to rave reviews. Prager lives and works in LA. View additional work credits on MyFDB.
